survive -- six-day-old cub didn't survive. karen gray houston has more of for us. >> reporter: it's been three weeks and the full examination, is in. they know he died of liver disease that coepsided with a lack of oxygen. mei-xian was romping in her outdoor play pen resting and sunning herself as zoo officials and animals -- zoo officials gather to discuss the news. >> the pattern of cell death shows lack of oxygen. >> not enough oxygen getting to the liver, they said, because the lungs were not fully sure. can't say for sure but the cub may have been premature. mom seems to be getting back to normal. >> she started eating at about 80% of her bamboo. >> reporter: she lost weight, down to 220-pounds from 240. but her birthing history, five

failed pregnancies, the birth of tai xian in 2005 and followed by the death of the latest female cub has given zoo officials pause for reflection. >> there is no decision about the future of mei and tian, whether they will leave or remain. >> reporter: but, according to 9 existing five-year agreement, there is a possibility of a slot with one or two breeding pandas in china. >> yes. >> reporter: the panda public would miss her if show went away, but zoo camers say -- zoo keepers say it's early to talk about that, especially when the panda might be in the late stages of bleeding. >> we saw behavior stages in the beginning once the cub died. i have a hard time attributing it to grieving. >> reporter: if she was not grieving, what was it? >> we saw a bit of searching behavior even though she was present when the cub was removed from the den. >> reporter: she stopped the cradling behavior and the zoo keepers, too away her toy. the past is the past.

least two games in a row. >> watching closely. thank you both. vice president joe biden and his republican rival paul ryan are taking center stage in a debate in kentucky tonight. fox's craig bosswell is in danville with the latest. >> reporter: vice president joe biden arrived in kentucky today hours ahead of tonight's debate. the 69-year-old with almost 40 years of washington experience s expected to vigorously challenge his republican rival paul ryan, following on following mitt romney's powerful debate. many polls suggest the first presidential debate wiped out much of the lead held by president obama. >> one thing i will be looking for is whether or not joe biden is going to address the contrast between the barack obama that he described, in his convention speech, and the barack obama we saw in the stage in denver last week. that is one think this i will be watching for. can biden repair obama's image? >> reporter: congressman paul

ryan arrived in the blue grass state yesterday. many say the 42-year-old wisconsin congressman will rely on the extensive knowledge of the federal budget and the economy in tonight's debate. >> a couple of weeks ago, thought it was -- obama's lead was lengthening, but now it's narrowed quite a bit. i would like to hear them engage in some substantive issues, and i look forward to hearing ryan's budget plans. craig bosswell live in danville, kentucky, joining us live. a lot of analysis floating around on this one. with regard to biden, smart folks are saying he has to make up for his boss's tumble during the debate last week. >> certainly. the pressure is on the vice president to stop that momentum after last week's debate. and expect, we're told, to expect the vice president to come out swinging and were told by paul ryan's campaign that the congressman is going vigorously defend policy and

vigorously defend facts and figures, which he's known for. >> and talk about ryan. some say you have to explain how the romney-ryan budget will relate to the everyday amtrak joes of america. >> right, expect that to be brought up. you are going to be talking about, in the domestic policy into this, you'll get into social security and the plans to remake medicare-medicaid and they're going to come up. expect the vice president to go after the congressman on that issue as well and this is being called a thrill in theville with an obvious not from mohammad ali, who is from louisville. they're expecting fireworks. >> as i understand it, danville prepared for the debate and all of the visitors who have come in. >> most definitely. a small town, around 16,000 they have done this before. the college did this in 2000. they held the vice presidentual debate here. they know what they're doing, they're ahead of it and the stage is set here for local candidates. they have gone through and done their walk-throughs and have been praying for this debate.

. a heartbreaking scene in baltimore after a fire killed five people, including four children. the fire broke out this morning in a northeast neighborhood. when they arrived, they found heavy fire and smoke pouring out of the first floor of the rowhouse. they found the bodies of a woman and four children. relatives were overcome by emotion. >> it's too hard to feed a family a whole lot of members. it hurts. and i can't deal with this.

>> as firefighters prepare to battle the blaze, a woman tossed her two-month-old baby to the man below and jumped to safety. it took firefighters more than an hour to bring it under control. two firefighters hurt battling the flames and their injuries not serious, the cause is under investigation. back to breaking news in silver spring now. a child fell from the eighth floor and police are at the scene. audrey barnes has more as well. good evening. >> reporter: good evening, will. i am at the park montgomery apartment complex. the child was on the ninth floor of the building, and you can so the broken out screen up there and that is where he tumbled from, the window, fell down 90 feet and this tree here, broke his fall, police believe. you can see where the branches are shattered by this. if -- thattive if the child hit the air conditioning units, this would be a different center. the -- different story. the detectives tell us he is at the trauma center and talking

and even asked when he could go home. now, the investigation begins. police need to find out who he was in that apartment by himself and how he was able to get out of the window the way it s. we know there are screens on the window, but there is no other security barrier between him and the ground. at this point, looks like the little child survived his fall. now they have to investigate and find out what happened. will, back to you. >> that is good news. thank you, audrey barnes. investigators trying to figure out who mit a -- let a fire at a church. as beth parker shows us, whoever did it didn't stick around for long. >> reporter: it appears whoever lit the fire never set foot inside the church. just came up to the window. >> and they stuck their hand in. can you see where the pattern for the accelerant that they sprayed and there is also

patterns on the chairs. >> reporter: can you see the bench frame where the window was kicked in here at the baptist church in indian head, maryland. the pastor got the call early on wednesday morning in and raced to the church. >> and the smoke was everywhere. >> reporter: the fire was isolateed on to a small area. >> by the grace of god, it didn't catch the wooden rafters. had it did, we could have lost the entire building. >> reporter: next to the crisp, white steeple, there are clean green up trucks. the smoke left a layer of block is the -- black soot everywhere. every surface and piece of the building has to be scrubbed. >> the walls, ceilings, you name it. everything. >> reporter: and they're wiping away any anger. >> one of the ways we need to process this is to understand this is our building. >> reporter: a state fire marshal is investigating. >> no clue at all. we haven't received any type of threat or anyone disgruntelled with the church that i'm aware of. >> reporter: the pastor thinks

in town, we averaged up to 62 degrees. gaithersburg, 59 degrees; hagerstown is 58 degrees, too. the other reporting stations in our northern areas, westminster is reporting 57 degrees and severna park, 57 degrees as well and once the sun goes down, look at how clear the skies are. that is the high pressure block everything out of here and in this, nothing but blue skies and started off cool end anded up, again, lower 60s and this is where we are the next few hours. clear skies and at 7, 9, and 11:00 and there are enough clouds around us and some temperatures drop into this 40s in the city and in the suburbs, we probably will have some -- a couple of mid, maybe upper 30s

this afternoon. several people willing to testify looking into the plan to get udc on a strong financial footing and an overflow had to be opened up. last week, udc presented the right-sizing plan calling for steep cuts including job cuts and shuttering of other campus sites. matt ackland is live with more. matt? >> reporter: it's not often that you see the council chamber packed, the hallway outside and then another overflow room packed with people to testify today. 127 people have signed up to testify about udc. the reason why the council is involved here, d.c. taxpayers spend about $60 million a year to supplement udc's budget and they think udc needs to get its financial health in order. a packed council chamber. students and professors and in the front row, udcs president,

allen sesson. mcdeafy listed off -- mcduffy listed off serious problems he sees at udc. >> unfortunately, the university is in a financially unattainable situation. it's spending down the general fund to close budget gaps. >> reporter: the board of trustees proposed a number of ideas that upset some from job cuts to closing the udc community college campus on north capital. moving that campus to udcs main campus on connecticut avenue. >> udc should be right-sized but the community college should be left alone. >> reporter: one of the first speakers focused comments directly at the leader of the university. even speaking about issues that fox 5 uncovered last year when it comes to expensive travel by the doctor. >> dr. sessions who is famous for taking lavish trips with his wife overseas, spending wrecklessly taxpayer mean, didn't want anything to do with

the community college. >> reporter: and some believe that udc faculty and staff are making too much money. council member michael brown compared udc to other universities. >> udc pays the faculty and staff substantially more the salaries of the peer universities with an overall -- of medium range. >> reporter: those on staff begged for more support, and saying udc is moving in the right direction. >> we need your support to be successful. thank you. >> and speak of the financial support, udc is asking $21 million to get the plan in place and this is that list of the people signed up to testify tonight. student after student and there is three pages here of students wanting to speak out. the last person on the agenda tonight, dr. sessions himself and there is no idea how long

this meeting is going to last. d.c. police spent much of the day searching the scene of a fatal shooting in northeast. the 21-year-old gregory troxberg was shot yesterday afternoon. it happened on eighth street. the government hasn't been caught. the police are offering a $25,000 reward in that case. nearly two months after a violent beating to on capitol hill, a neighborhood is rallying together to support the victims. during a press conference, community leaders announced a fund raiser and festival to benefit the massland family. the festival will be held on sunday, october 21st and that will give people about crime and safety issues and raise money for the family trust. so far, more than $10,000 has been donated. president obama's and mitt romney's debate is now in the record books. it's now a showdown between the running mates. tonight, joe biden and paul ryan will go head-to-head in the first debate. wisdom martin has this week's

campaign u. >> reporter: we're here at campaign u, and we're talking about the polls and the big vice presidential debate tonight. professor, tell me about the polls. we have seen a dramatic change since the last time? >> you have national polls where mitt romney is ahead and that would have been unthinkable a few weeks ago and whether -- whoever you think won the media has determined that that -- mitt romney won huge and brama lost. you will -- barack obama lost badly. bottom line is, when the media narrative resets and said that mitt romney is surging and mitt romney is becoming more moderate in his rhetoric and has been reaching out making himself more personal, by doing things he had not done out for the elect, he's re- this election, he's re-introducing himself to the people that he did not do a few months ago. the tightening of the poll suggest it might be working. >> what about the presidential

debate how huge is that? >> it's really huge. it's a dry run for the vice presidential debate. we'll see if vice president biden can figure out what the romney strategy is and become the one who pushes paul ryan to answer to him rather than vice- versa, which is what happened at the presidential debate. paul ryan is not going to sit back and take accusations from joe biden, but this is going to be a feisty, energetic debate. it won't get nasty because they're sitting at a table with each other. it will be aggressive and polite. >> let's get the opinion of young voters, they're targets in some of this. three voters here, three students in the classroom all decide, not going to ask, anything the happening between now and the election change any of your mind? any of them? >> i think in the realm of things possible, though, it would take a lost changes and policies for that to happen and

they apparently, mit switched to the middle after the past debate and did change a lot of people's mines and there is some unskieded voters out there. >> not going to change your mind? >> no. >> how but? >> for a lot of the american public, there is a potential. not necessarily for the vp debate but the next presidential debate and a lot of people are hanging on what happened. >> would anything change your mind? >> i don't think so. we were talking about how that unlikely would happen. they would need a major policy reversal with the support of their parties instead of saying they're representatives of the party and in addition to something really outlandish and ridiculous. i don't thank is going to happen. >> the presidential debate what, are you looking for tonight? you expect sparks to fly? anything particular you are look for example? >> i think that -- i think a lot of people are underestimating joe biden that

nationwide meningitis outbreak linked to tainted steroids shots is spreading. idaho is the 11th state to report one illness. 14 people died, including one in maryland and another in virginia. >> reporter: idaho becomes the 11th state didiagnose a person with fungal meningitis. the cdc releasing the latest numbers on total cases and death, giving a glimpse of how the outbreak is spreading across the country. as of thursday, at least 14 people have died in connection to the infected meds, up from 12 yesterday and with florida reporting the second death from the outbreak and indiana reporting its first. the number of infected jumped to at least 170, up from 137 just one day earlier. the contaminated shots originated from the new england compounding center, a specialty pharmacy in massachusetts. the company issued a voluntary recall of all of its meds while
